It is a scar on the body of this country, a memory of a horrific event.
It is the anniversary of the event that took place on September 11, 2001. Four hijacked airplane became lethal weapons. One each to the "Twin Towers" which graced the skyline of New York, NY; the third to the Pentagon Building in Washington, DC; the last headed toward the White House before it was diverted to Shanksville, PA. An act of terror never seen before or duplicated since.
2,996 killed. The lives of those who knew them altered forever. Uncle Sam took a blow that required a standing eight-count. The nation reeled under the magnitude of such callousness and cruelty. Those who thought of us as some kind of bully were giddy with glee, thinking we had received some type of retribution. Our allies gasped in shock, fearing the same could happen to them.
We showed our resiliency. We mourned our losses (and continue to do so on this day). We vowed to never let this happen again. We sought some type of justice (some might call it vengeance). We demonstrated our resolve. We arose from the rubbles and ashes to regain our dignity. This eagle may have been wounded, but it has and continues to regain its strength. This constitutional republic, warts and all, still remains. This "star-spangled banner yet waves o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."
The ceremonies marking this day across this land that we love will be plenteous. I encourage you to partake of one, if your schedule permits. This Saturday will also continue a tradition of service projects in your communities. The same request applies. There will also be tributes better than this brief post in the 'blogosphere and other social media. Go and patronize them. In whatever way you choose to commemorate this day, do it with true patriot love.
Never Forget.
